I think I remember reading in a blurb somewhere on tvguide.com that the Carnivale guys decided quickly that if the show wasn't picked up, they would not persue continuing the story in other forms. (graphic novels, movies, shopping to other networks, etc.)
I wonder if their decision was related to watching other fantay shows (like Firefly and to a lesser extent Futurama) continue to try to exist, leaving the fans to live through an eternity of "it'll probably never get picked up again, but there's still a chance." Over two and a half years have gone by for firefly so far, and people will probably still be hoping until the DVD sales figures for Serenety come out, which may not be for another year.
I can't figure an opinion as to which fate is worse. TV execs are retarded.
